Vedge - Andheri Lokhandwala, Mumbai.

My navigator was studying Arianna Silvers' antique charts carefully. Nina was running around his legs like the adorable furball she was. He looked up and said that we were not just facing any wall of ice but something called as the mirror of memories. Arianna must've been a romantic lass coming up with names like that. However, something strange began to transpire. Suddenly the mist was gone and I was standing inside a restaurant. I could not spot the rest of my crew save one person and Nina.

Crewmate : Captain, we have been here before.

Captain : Holy Arianna Silvers. I know this place, I was here before. Its Vedge.

Vedge would always be special to me. Almost two years ago when I was a struggling blogger, a nice lady by the name of Chandni Tolani invited me to this place. And that is how Grubzone came into existence. Now, both Vedge and me have grown from what we were back then. I used to feel that Vedge would cave in to the contest of the eateries in Andheri Lokhandwala and I used to feel that I won't survive long as a blogger either. Jeez, I sure was a poor sod back then.

Flash forward to present, Vedge has not only survived but it has got multiple awards and has recently upgraded its menu to bring a truly vegetarian fine dine experience to the table. As for me, I would love to tell my tale over a cup of hot chocolate another day.

Vedge still looks the same as far as ambiance is concerned. Beautiful lamps hang from the ceiling. An eclectic mix of modern art design adorns the wall. And then there are the antiques. At this point, I would request you to have a glance at the first blog post I ever made. Ok actually the second.

There is a new chef in town so a new menu was apt. Vedge simplified its menu, removed some "not so favorites" and added a whole lot of new things encompassing Indian, Italian, Chinese and Mexican.

Here is what I tried from this diverse menu.

Paan Mocktail was refreshing, minty and sweet. It did not actually contain Tobacco or betel nut. A simple drink that was delectable. It reminded me of the Paan shots that I had in my last Vedge trip. I had longed for a full drink rather than shots.

Captain : Did this memory get upgraded or something? I don't remember this the last time.

Crewmate : It was there as a shot last time, Cappy.

Nina : Nya :3

Captain : If this is a memory being replayed then only me and you have to be in here. Why are you in here Nina?

Chili Honey Potato emulated the Honey Chili chicken that I love so much. This wok tossed potato did not make me miss my favorite protein. An emulation well done. It was juicy with flavor oozing out of every bite. The flavor felt like a mix of spicy, sweet and had a bit of tang.

Laksa Soup was a simple affair. The flavor was earthy and spicy. It had a lovely aroma as well. They do offer the option of making it less spicy but that would kill the flavor. This soup is very appetizing so expect yourself to be quite ravenous after eating this.

Tex Mex Lasagna was the piece de resistance of the Vedge experience. Initially I was disappointed to see that it was not a classical Lasagna. Pasta sheets were replaced with Tortillas, Italian veggies and spices with Mexican beans, rice and spices. But the flavor was quite something. The crunchy sheets with spicy savory mex beans tasted amazingly food. It got over and I didn't even realize it, it was that good. I wouldn't call it a Lasagna, preferring to call it a Nacho sandwich. But semantics aside, it tasted great.

Captain : This is too good. And this was definitely not there last time.

Crewmate : Maybe this memory is getting updated from the real Vedge somewhere in the world.

Captain : I like this memory, its tasty. Fine food in the middle of nowhere. Thats magic.

Massaman Curry was pungent, savory and tasted similar to Thai green curry minus the color and Kaffir lime. While it tasted well to me due to its similarity to Thai green curry, its important to note that this dish is difficult to replicate in a vegetarian environment. Without the seafood's inherent flavors, this curry tastes closer to Green curry or Khao Suey as coconut milk becomes dominant.

Magic Chocolate Pot was reminiscent of the popular chocolate bomb that I am seeing at many places. This contained praline, hazelnut mousse, chocolate, brownie and caramel sauce. It was a tasty dessert but a heavy one at that.

Captain : Cannot afford to go high within a trance. What would that make it? A trance within a trance.

Crewmate : Ince..

Captain : Don't say it.

Crewmate : ception.

The service was fine and the servers even accommodated my constant shifting of the dishes to a table with daylight( for food photography). This bit is always annoying for the serving staff.

The pricing felt a bit on the higher side. But seemed to be on par with premium vegetarian eateries like cream centre or the like.

Vedge has definitely come a long way since it opened shop. They do seem to have a good menu on the table. All that remains is consistency. I enjoyed my meal experience despite being a carnivore and I think that itself speaks a lot about the place's caliber. Vedge is a must try if you are a vegetarian.

The Captain's Score : 8/10

"
Captain eats the dessert and wakes up back on his ship. The crew is staring at him in shock.
Captain : My head hurts. Did I pass out?

First mate : No, you had completely disappeared. Along with the deck sweeper and your furball.

Captain : The dessert woke us up, apparently the mirror of memories doesn't support inception yet.

Crewmate : But why did only that memory play? Could have been anything else. Is there a reason?

Captain : Huh who cares. I am tired of waiting. Row the ship backwards if you have to and blow this damn wall up.

Navigator : That won't be necessary.

Boveda Bistro - Andheri Lokhandwala, Mumbai

The sun shone upon the high seas. The battle was upon us. The flags were raised. Our cannons against their artillery and bazookas. My cannoneer was a much better marksman hitting the enemy ship hard. They had advanced weapons but poorly trained gunners. One of my cannonballs pierced the hull of the enemy vessel effectively sealing its fate. The rogues then steered their sinking ship towards a small isle. This battle will now move to the land. But hark, what does my looking glass see? A small restaurant on the island. Battle does make me hungry.

I had visited Boveda(Catalan: Vault) a few months back. A lot has changed since then. Boveda has transformed itself into a bistro from its past bar avatar. Hence, its more in the food mainstream now. I received a mail(My inbox is really tasty these days) from Syesha Kapoor to come sample the grub at her restaurant - Boveda. Not privy to the developments, I mentioned that I did visit Boveda a while back. Syesha however told me of the redevelopment and requested that I give the new place a try.

The establishment retains its ambiance. The walls look more elegant with a touch of subtle artistry. The lighting is still dim from Boveda the Bar days. The restaurant is located in the popular food district of Andheri Lokhandwala. It is surrounded by dusty lanes which are quite parched in the summer. As such, the restaurant tends to feel like a calm, cool, dim and comfortable retreat. It is almost like an oasis in the middle of the desert. The bar with its cage like woodwork and bright lighting mimics a rock concert stage.

One new addition to the interior is a live counter fashioned like an American food truck. It feels like a novelty to the ambiance.

Oldies from the 30s and 40s echoed in the premises when I entered. I actually liked that, though I was told that the music was random. In my opinion, the music added to the tranquility of the Bistro.

The culinary commander(because that sounds cooler than head chef) Swapnil Mulundkar helped me with my choices for the main course. Vinod(The resident Captain) helped me choose the new appetizers and cocktails. So lads and lasses, time to move on to ze grub.

Maiden's Prayer - Legend has it, that once the Gods fought the Titans at the edge of the world. Their thirst was significantly weakening their abilities against their enemies. Seeing this, Hera the sister of Zeus prayed to the heavens and out poured a pink elixir that instantly energized the Gods. Since that day, the elixir came to be known as Maiden's prayer.

If you believed that, then my story telling ability is improving. Coming back to reality, this is a concoction made out of vodka, pomegranate, passion fruit and lime. It feels sweet and tangy while its kick feels spicy. This is not to be confused with 1930's New Orleans cocktail by the same name.

Captain : A battle makes a man thirsty and crazy, this pink elixir be me savior.

First mate : We must find those ruffians. They are hiding somewhere.

Captain : They are after the blue compass, they must be in one of the eateries.

Unkempt Stranger : Psst. Heard ye folks are looking for someone.

The classical Pina colada was perfect with its flavor and proportions. This sweet cocktail cooled me completely. Wait, has Summer started already?

Aioli Scented Chicken was among the establishment's top sellers. This chicken was marinated in aioli and delectable flavors would simply burst out the moment I thrust my teeth into the meat. The flavor was quite addictive. This entree was served with a side of paprika based sour cream. The protein went well with the dip. I am glad I listened to Vinod.

Captain : We are looking for a bunch that appears beat up and smells of defeat.

Unkempt Stranger : Name's Narakdu, I saw the men you describe hiding in an alley.

Captain : Good, can ya lead us there mate?

Unkempt Stranger : Of course.

First mate : And ya don't want anything in return?

Unkempt Stranger : A piece of chicken would be nice.

Bacon wrapped Chicken was served with lyonnaise potatoes, pesto jus and a ton of French beans. The Bacon tasted well, though the chicken felt a little insipid. The beans were far too many for my liking, it affected the plating. In my opinion, the quantity of the beans should have been halved and probably chopped into smaller pieces. The pesto jus rescued the day as it countered the chicken's blandness. This dish however does need improvement.

Chorizo Ragout and Mascarpone pizza - This pizza was loaded with stewed Chorizo pieces and loads of mascarpone cheese. The pizza felt creamy, savory, smoked and slightly sweet in flavor. It was an interesting use of Chorizo, the flavor was a first time for me. The pizza was delectable but I felt that there was scope for improvement. For example, a bit of increase in the savory content would work wonders.

Chocolate Gooey Cake looked really pretty and tasted well. I however felt that it was a bit pedestrian in flavor. The cake itself wasn't very gooey rather being a bit dry and crumbly. This could however be because I was comparing it with the Gooey cake that I had last week. The last one set the bar really high.

The service was perfect, Vinod was very professional. The crew appeared a little small and could be under strain during rush hours.

The pricing is variable. Some items appear on the higher side like the sandwiches for example but then the pizzas feel cheap. The costs come to roughly 1400 INR for two people which makes it par with most pub cum restaurants across town.

Boveda is located in a locality where people are spoilt for choice and faces intense competition especially from Brewbot next door. Come to Boveda for their cocktails, their innovative pizzas and well researched European mains. Come to Boveda for the calm, privacy and fine dining.

The Captain's Score : 8/10

"
(Party walks to a dark alley)
Captain : Where are the people we talked about?

Narakdu(laughs) : You don't get it do you?

Peter the Cheater(approaches from the shadows) : Gullible lads walked right into my trap.

Rocky : We are going to end this here. And we will take yer ship in exchange for sinking ours.

First mate : (Takes out a sword) My my, things keep getting interesting don't they?

Captain : Peter, Rocky and Narakdu. I offer you a last chance to walk away. Your lives will be spared.

Peter : (Laughs with Rocky and Narakdu) Fat chance Captain, yous gonna leave this world and yer map, ship and treasures will be mine.

Cafe Mezzuna - Andheri Lokhandwala, Mumbai

The strange green coin that I had obtained in my last voyage was definitely a hint. Me navigator was right with his theory and it was sheer luck that Nina's friends gave us the next clue. On this ancient map, a legendary emerald city was marked along one of the routes. The city was thought to be nothing more than a ruin of a time long past. These jade coins were once used in that city and are a rarity in these parts. If this coin appeared out of nowhere then there is definitely something to be found within these ruins.

Contrary to the naming, the ruins were not actually green in color. The place was a mix of pewter shades lost in the dust. But lo behold, there was intense green light emanating from somewhere within the ruins. What was going on? My landing party triangulated on the source of the green light. It seemed to be a, tavern of some kind but our entry was prohibited by a burly man who asked for a Token. Instinctively, I held out my green coin to which the man smiled and let us enter.

Literally resembling the Emerald city from the Wizard of Oz, Cafe Mezzuna is another venture from the people behind Mainland China and Oh Calcutta. With it, comes the hospitality group's good taste for thematic ambiances and excellent service. Life can be chaotic in a mall like Infiniti and places like Mezzuna serve as a nice retreat from the noise pollution and third rate food court eateries.

Cafe Mezzuna was quite full when I had arrived but I had a table booked for me (Yay me?). The vibes felt good and there was a feeling of placid comfort in the cafe.

Without wasting much time I placed my order.

Since I was going boozeless for the day, I started my sojourn with this creamy Mint Smoothie. It was enjoyable though I did expect it to be peppermint and not regular mint.

A tasting platter made on request.

Jalapeno Cheese poppers on the right were passable. A piping hot savory snack but I have had better.

Pan seared Mushroom tarts with mozzarella and a balsamic drizzle were savory, cheesy and finger licking good. These were the perfect combination of the salty and the subtle savory. The ideal vegetarian appetizer for me.

Spinach cheese sambousek at the top right felt very pedestrian and was perhaps the only thing that I chose not to finish on the platter.

Potato Croquettes on the top with leek and cheddar were slightly tough but still a flavorful and savory appetizer.

Captain : So much to eat on one little platter.

Crewmate : Does this mean I get a bite this time? :D

Captain : No.

Crewmate : =(

Harissa spiced grilled cottage cheese skewers. Lets call this Johnny since the original name is longer than the Fellowship of the ring. Johnny was spicy down to the very core and did not feel like paneer rubbed with spices like in most other places. Johnny was like a wall flower that turned out to be a bombshell in disguise. Johnny was good, keep calm and eat Johnny.

Pan Grilled Mushrooms with chili, spices and lemon felt very much like the crispy corn in Mainland China. The flavor was not too over the top but still felt addictive. Seemed to be a perfect bar nibble or a great side to any meal. The mushrooms were not too soft but still juicy with flavor oozing out of every bite.

Grilled Prawn skewers were served in a style that made these appear like a luxury for the plebeians. And these tasted equally good. Garnished in an anchovy butter mixed with garlic, the flavor was really something else. Juicy, spicy and filled with the flavors of the ocean - this was one of the best Prawn based dishes that I have ever had.

Captain : I wonder what clue will we find here. Who expected a Tavern to be here anyway?

Crewmate : Maybe we should have brought the ship cat along.

Captain : She did not want to get off the ship for this island. I think she hates green.

Grilled Chicken Skewers were rubbed with Harissa and served with parsley hummus. Strangely, I found myself like the Paneer skewers more oer here. The Harissa did not seem to suit the kind of cooking used here. It may have worked with the paneer but not with the chicken.

Beer battered fried fish served with lemon tartare. Melty basa is probably not the best kind of fish for deep frying. While the crust was flavorful and spicy, the fish core felt shallow and uninspired. This can be remedied by using a different fish.

The Jerk spiced chicken pizza looked good, had the right ingredients but had a glitch with the flavor. While the chicken used was indeed rubbed with Jamaican Jerk spices as billed, the flavor of the pizza was dominated by the Jalapenos and the Bell peppers. These ingredients had managed to neutralize the chicken's flavor and made the pizza feel more like a pico de gallo pizza. I feel that the veggies could be reduced and the chicken increased to keep the flavor meatier.

Stone Grilled Chicken was served in a most impressive manner with a side of potato salad and sautéed  greens. It was served on a plate that was constantly being heated by a small burner. The chicken portions contained both a breast and a leg. The Chicken leg tasted great and was cooked perfectly. It was full of flavor and appropriately tender.

However the breast portion was too well done. The edges had become hard and chewy. I pondered what could have happened and the only reason I can think of is that both cuts of the meat were cooked in the same temperature and manner - Probably being the leg cut's temperature since it turned out to be perfect.

Vanilla Rock Dessert is an item that is going to be introduced shortly to the public. The blogging folk have been the first humans to beta test the dessert before it goes live. Using molecular gastronomy, a dollop of whip cream is snap frozen and then placed in a rainbow colored puddle made out of various syrups and fruit compotes. The thing is then generously showered with a nutella like hazelnut chocolate sauce. The desert works well as a novelty though mascarpone would make a better alternative than whip cream.

Captain : This looks like a mountain of gems.

Crewmate : It seems to follow symmetry with the colors.

Captain : That being said, where would the next clue be?

Passing Stranger : I could tell you, if you part with some of yer food.

Captain : We don't deal with random tricksters.

Stranger : Your call. You need all the help you can find for the Blue Compass.

Captain : Who told you I was hunting for the Blue Compass?

The service is stellar as mentioned before. The restaurant was adequately staffed and all tables were well attended(despite being crowded). The servers were professional as expected from a restaurant from Anjan Chatterjee's stable.

The pricing is variable. Some items feel a bit on the higher side while some others feel quite cheap. I suppose that one's experience dictates of what they think of the pricing. To keep this brief, it seems to be on par with other Cafes and pubs.

Cafe Mezzuna seems to have a lot going in its favor but suffers from quite a few glitches too. The appetizers here were really stellar while the mains could use improvement. However to sum up my experience, I think that I really enjoyed my trip to Mezzuna. Glad to see Specialty restaurants taking strides in the realms of Western food.

"
Crewmate : So did that scamming old man give you anything?

Captain : A piece of paper with numbers.

Crewmate : What kind of  numbers?

Captain : Fool's Co-ordinates.

The Captain's Score : 8/10

Beers and grub by Brewbot - Andheri Lokhandwala, Mumbai

I grumbled as I had no internet in the middle of the sea. To steal wifi, we needed to be near the coastline. In the old days, pirates stole booty and booze. Now here I am, tryin' to grab some wifi. Suddenly I spotted a small ship moving in the same direction as us, huzzah haha.

Captain of the Small ship : Gosh honey, why do you think that big ship is following us?

Small Ship's Captain's Wife : No idea honey... Love, my internet suddenly became slow.

With the internet back up, I found a map in me inbox. Sure beats maps inside beat up empty bottles. The mark on the map read "Brewbot". It was time to chart a new course.

"Whats up Doc?"
Nay,
"Where's the Grog Bot?"

Something is brewing in Brewbot and it better be beer.
Brewbot is one of Mumbai's few Microbreweries. They have their own unique brews which makes it a fun place to travel to. Especially for a beer lover.

Each of those 70's Box Robots represent one of the four unique beers made here. The Skywalker(Bot looks like Lego Darth Vader gone android), Floating head, Mojo Rising and Black Mamba(Vodoo bot). The place feels much like a tavern but the grub was good and perhaps far better than most main stream restaurants.

The reader is warned, I am not much of a beer lover being more of a Rummy pirate or a Vodka guzzler.
From Left to Right, The Black mamba is a bitter sweet brew whose additives make it feel less stronger than it actually is. Then comes the mid western pale ale(Mojo Rising) with its strong flavor. Then the Kolsch Skywalker which felt closest to traditional German beer.

And finally my drink, the Hefeweizen Floating head. This wheat beer had a banana like tang to it. I sampled each brew and finally settled for the Floating head. It was potent and I felt that Brewbot's personal touches were most perceptible on this one.

But a beer lover can order a quad shot platter of all four. After all, you can't choose yer grog without tasting everything first.

Captain : These look so colorful. Like half a rainbow.

Crewmate : So which one do you want, Cappy?

Captain :  Just one shot for ol' me? Hahahahaha,(serious face) Surely you must be jesting lad.

I sampled a lot of Brewbot's grub and I am of the view that it beats most pubs on the wining and dining part.

Eggplant Involtini - These rolled up parcels of Aubergine and Zucchini were quite sumptuous. It was an excellent vegetarian take on the classic Italian meat delicacy. The aubergine was probably used sparingly since I did not get my dreaded anti aubergine sensations upon eating this one. The marinara in the bottom added flavor depth, though it could have been spread more uniformly across the dish.

Bacon wrapped prawns are a fusion of two things that I absolutely adore. This dish does full justice to both meats without killing the flavor of any. Soft and juicy bacon strips are wrapped around prawns like a Knight wearing his armor. The bacon tasted perfect with its flavor palate of saltiness, savory and a tad bit of sweetness all of which harmonized well with the Prawn's umame like flavor. This dish had a lot of culinary depth and I'd say that it was the entree of the day.

Captain : This is so good, its like having Vodka while having Rum.

Crewmate : Won't that become a cocktail then?

Captain : Aye, this be like a cocktail of food. Tasty Tasty cocktail.

House Special BBQ Pulled Pork sliders were a delectable trio of three buns. The meat dominated the flavor thankfully. I cannot tell how many times I have found the bread dominating the flavor in measly packed sliders.
Strangely, the flavor somehow resembled North Indian home cooked meats with a high level of saltiness. I had expected the pork to have a bit of BBQ sauce or be caramelized.

Lamb sliders were a bit of a disappointment. The burger felt dry and the cooking felt uninspired. Perhaps getting rid of the Arugula and substituting caponata with either stock or BBQ sauce would greatly improve the flavor.

House Special Calamari wasn't the best squid that I have had. But it was quite a unique twist to the original. I am used to having my calamari coated with batter and deep fried. Brewbot's version had calamari rings floating in a soup made out of white wine, lemon juice, garlic, shallots and tomato. The soft chewy rings went great with the earthy soup.

Goat Cheese Lollibots err lollipops were simple goat cheese balls sprayed with corn flakes and herbs. This felt more like a side. Other than being a visual novelty, I did not particularly find this as an interesting appetizer.

Time to move on to the mains.

Poutine - For an item so easy to make and so common in North America, it comes off as a major surprise why poutine is still a rare to come across treat in India. Brewbot's variant was amazingly good. The flavor of the chicken had completely rubbed onto the soft fries. The cheese curds completed the alchemy. The dish felt greasy yet so tasty. It makes an ideal choice for the main slot in a multiple course meal.

Captain : I am putting this poutine in me ship's menu.

Crewmate : That's a cheesy wordplay.

Captain : Cheesy curdy wordplay.

Farmhouse Pizza was the better of the two pies served to me. That is saying a lot since the other one contained meat. This had a pesto base with pumpkin, bell peppers, mushrooms, Ricotta and pine nuts. The pie was both visibly alluring and pleasant tasting. Pesto dominated the aroma and flavor of the pizza. It also felt light due to the thin base and healthy ingredients. Rejoice vegetarians.

Quad Cheese and Bacon pizza. Bacon was a add on, so this was mostly a cheese pizza. It was said to contain Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, cheddar and probably ricotta. The flavor however felt a bit off. Though I was told that it may be due to the Gorgonzola, I am positive that it wasn't that since I have had the cheese before without problems. I think this could be blamed on the cheesy overdose. Something clashed somewhere. Bacon hardly felt as a participant despite its generous presence. Its flavor completely drowned in the sea of cheese.

Chicken Roulade was like a star batsman who went out for a duck. The chicken felt too tough and insipid. The flavor had not sunk well into it. The house stuffing tilted the flavor favor towards the greens. This probably contributed to the chicken tasting bland. The stuffed greens should have been at most a third of what was present.

Brewbot had a nice selection of desserts.
I am going to use the ascending order in case of desserts. Best dessert comes last.
Chocolate Fondant looked perfect on visuals but felt very average. It seemed to mimic choco lava cakes more than fondants.

Apple Strudel was a good emulation of the popular Viennese pastry. The filling was soft, tangy and had an aroma of the freshest apples. Dusted with sweet spices and a drizzle of caramel, this can easily be a table favorite.

House Special Cheese Cake. The House Special names were getting old at this point but that still does not stop this cheesecake from being awesome. Creamy, soft and tangy (due to lemon essence)- this reminded me of Starbucks discontinued Lemon jazz cheesecakes. Well its Starbuck's loss, I enjoyed Brewbot's variant a lot.

Chocolate and Peanut butter parfait was the best of the sweet lot. It looked brilliant, had an amazing flavor and it left me wanting for more. Too bad, the local patisserie doesn't sell these. The top jacket was made of rich chocolate while the parfait was made of peanut butter and had crunchy elements and crisps embedded into it. Sweet and salty(due to peanut butter) would be the best way to describe it. If one is grubbing out at Brewbot then this is not to be missed.

Captain : Food the tasty frontier,

Crewmate : Looks like the Captain tripped on the fishing lines again.

Captain : These are the voyages of the Seaship Grubzone. Its eternal mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new food and new cuisines. To boldly eat where no human has ever eaten before.

Crewmate : That was a peg legged line.

The service mimicked that at any decent pub. Though this particular event was part of a blogger/influencer thing and one of the owners himself was assisting the servers so it would be difficult for me to comment thoroughly on the service.

The pricing leans towards the upper side. Its higher than pubs like BBC etc but lesser than fine dines. The food mostly is worth it but it could do a lot better with a little lesser.

Brewbot is definitely a celebrity among the likes of other famous bots like C3PO and R2D2. (BB 8 was a piece of junk though) This pub certainly outclasses a lot of establishments in the popular Lokhandwala food district. Floating Head Beer, Bacon wrapped Prawns, Poutine and the Parfait should make the perfect course meal for anyone.

The Captain's Score : 8/10

"Grog Check. Grub Check. Wifi...uhh skip that. All right lads, we have a long day on the sea. Until next time."
