Bohemian Brew - Khar, Mumbai.

The word Bohemian has both an artistic and adventurous context to it. It evokes the feeling of being different, liberal, adventurous and an explorer of the unknown. Mumbai is quickly becoming one of the World's best places for food. It joins the ranks of New York, Sydney, Singapore and Hong Kong when it comes to having multicultural food, fusion food and restaurants with interesting themes.

Bohemian Brew is a new hangout kind of a restaurant near the Khar railway station. It is the perfect place for the Bohemians to flock together and discuss their intrepid craft. The Brew part may initially throw you off making one believe that its a beer marker but make no mistake, the brew here actually means tea. Helmed by Chef Rahul Desai who is a Tea sommelier and a master brewer, the place shows great promise.

The place is made up of four distinct zones. The indoor dining area which is good for the quieter refined crowd, the outdoor area which is a shisha zone and perfect for large groups of people, A small private seating zone for elites and an underground room with board games for the cool kids.

Regardless of what kind of person you are, you will always find your zone at Bohemian brew. The decor is impressive. It is not over the top, radical and in your face ambiance. And it makes maximum use of every bit of estate available. It thus scores highly in ambiance. Do note that it looks far more beautiful in the evening.

The Feta and melon salad was a simple but rather effective construction. The salty feta complimented the balsamic drizzle very well and the sweet, tangy, savory flavors created a medley of sensations on the palate.

The Potato Gnocchi scored high on visuals but was average in flavor. I won't say that it was bad but I have definitely had better.

The Hummus bin Lamhe was delightful in both optics and flavor. The pulled lamb in the middle went excellently with the well flavored house made Hummus but I felt that this needed a bit of roughage. Maybe a piece of Pita or Lavash cracker at the side would have fit the bill. The menu did mention grilled pita as an accompaniment but none was served to me.

The Tea leaves Salad was suggested by Chef Rahul as a house specialty. Now I am not really a salad person but this did taste quite well. It was far better than the salads that I have had at many other places. So here is a healthy option for those who would like to narrow down their waistlines ha.

The Three stuffed cheese Mushroom was a disappointment. The cheese felt rather low as each bite was only mushroom all the way. A relatively simple construction and quite popular across many restaurants, this could have been better.

The Cajun Spiced Chicken pizza was the perfect meaty and cheesy pie. Light, less oily and made on a thin crust - this was one great offering of a pizza. The juicy Cajun chicken chunks were full of flavor which jumped out with every bite. And the cheese had a bit of stretchy lift effect too.

This Gooey Chocolate cake was a nice end to the whole experience. Sweet and decadent, just the way I like it. It was not on the menu as desserts supposedly rotate everyday, ask your server for your sweet options.

I cannot comment much on the service since the place is new but it appeared variable. Some servers seemed to perform better than some others. Probably a teething issue at this stage.

The pricing is pocket friendly and seems suited to cater the masses.

In entirety, the Bohemian Brew experience was good. There were some kinks that need to be worked upon but the restaurant concept feels refreshing and the food was mostly good. Do note that the restaurant serves thirty different types of tea. The Brew forms a big part of the restaurant and many a times your concoction will be brewed by Chef Rahul Desai himself. The Bohemian steampunk in me demands more tea mate.

Thalassa Greek Taverna - Khar, Mumbai.

'Thalassa' meaning "The Sea" in Greek is well known to travel enthusiasts as one of the iconic eateries in Northern Goa. Thus ask any one of those well-travelled fellows and they will always draw a comparison between Mumbai's and Goa's Thalassa. As a person who is less into partying and more into adventure and relaxing, I have always favored the quieter Southern Goa more. As result, I have never been to Goa's Thalassa so far. Hence for me the Thalassa experience was a completely fresh one.

The Goan Thalassa is more of a sea/beach themed place while Mumbai's Thalassa is a more of purist Greek Tavern. Understanding this distinction actually helps one appreciate the work put behind Mumbai's Thalassa.

Thalassa has four different seating areas - a front road facing Al fresco which is more suited for parties and big functions, A classy indoor, a Basement lounge and a backyard Al Fresco which is probably the most Greek themed space of the four. The indoor area is a mix of modern and a bit of Baroque. Snapshots from Greece adorn a wall as well. The backyard tavern has a bit of Santorini's white theme and a bit of a party vibe. In the day time, it wears its clothes of serene white beauty but at night its totally different and quite amazing.

Thankfully, the restaurant sticks to its theme and plays Greek music and not Kenny G, Bollywood or EDM as in cases of most other restaurants.

Chicken Souvlaki Skewers were juicy meat chunks wrapped in spices and served with Pita, salad, sundried tomato paste and Tzatziki. Souvlaki has been eaten in Greece for thousands of years with excavation records putting it as early as 17th century BC. These are uniquely Mediterranean in flavor and very different from Shish Kebabs, Yakitori or Satay. A few Turkic influences can be felt though since the meat tastes close to a Doner Kebab. One could eat the meat right off the skewer or place it in a pocket styled out of the Pita.

Thalassa Special Salad looked a bit dull when compared to the Souvlaki. The visuals could clearly use improvement as Salads are always supposed to be visibly enticing. The sensations that stood out were the subtly savory baby potatoes, a crunchy element from the pomegranate, sweetness from the caramelized onions and the salty Feta. It was a decent salad but would perhaps work better for a vegetarian.

Chicken Gyros is perhaps the only Greek dish that an average Indian epicure would know of. This however makes it more important as one finally has a dish which one has sampled before.  The presentation initially confused me as Gyros is traditionally a Pita based sandwich or a variation of Pitawich. Thalassa however lets you create the sandwich yourself. This allows one to style the sandwich themselves . Though it does run the risk of an inexperienced customer ruining the set up and then blaming the restaurant. We do live in an era where a scapegoat solves all problems.

I ended my meal with this Amore Chocolate Gelato. Though Thalassa did have Baklava, it did not visibly stand out to me and I chose to play it safe with a frozen dessert.

The service is one of the high points of the restaurant as the crew is well trained, well kept, knowledgeable and professional. They can efficiently cater both local and expatriate patrons.

The pricing however feels on the higher side. A meal for two with drinks could easily top Rs 2500. I think that the prices could be a little lower than what those are now.

Thalassa offers the complete Greek package - The food, feel and the ambiance. I'd greatly recommend a dinner trip so that one could savor both the food and the feel of the place.

Lighthouse Cafe - Khar, Mumbai

It was a dark misty night and the seas were rough. These conditions be treacherous for any ship at the high seas. The crew was extra alert, not a lad out of place. Suddenly out of the dark mists, a brief flash of light caught our attention. I immediately changed course towards the light. As we moved into the unknown, the flashes grew brighter and brighter. Any experienced man at sea knew what this meant. There was a lighthouse nearby.

As me ship pushed though the mists, the view became clearer. There was a small island in front of us with a lighthouse in the middle. The lookout sounded confused when he claimed that there was a tavern right inside that light house. This was enough to arouse me curiosity as I asked the fellas to look for a good spot to dock at while the landing party prepared to explore the island. Tavern inside the lighthouse? Fascinating.

The nice folks at Zomato remembered good ol' me when they were organizing a meet up for epicures at Light house Cafe. This cafe is more of a pub or a tavern if one has to strictly go by the appearance. The most prominent part of this small sized restaurant is the bar. But a small obscure counter adjacent to the bar with a loud signboard saying FOOD reassures that there is plenty of grub too. The dim lit appearance is perfect for a sinful weekend binge.

And if that wasn't good enough - There is live Music(Wednesdays) and a DJ too. So much in a little cafe is worth every moment spent here. The vibe is similar to that in a club. Food, drinks, frolic and music to go with that.

The party started with a bunch of house special cocktails. This was a part of their special Beer and Burger's menu. Some of these cocktails were made by the fellas at the meet up themselves. Fun for us to be honorary bartenders(though lousy), I reckon.

Caribbean Mix was undoubtedly my first choice. If you have to ask why then you are not reading enough of my works mate. This was a beer cocktail mixed with Vodka, Malibu, Coconut water, pineapple and some Tabasco. The flavor was sweet to start with. As the tongue bathed in the drink, the flavor of the coconut which was somewhat similar to that in Bounty Chocolates emerged. And as the drink went down me passages, a strong tangy-spicy aftertaste could be felt. This definitely got my spirits up.

Crewmate : Any Pirate gags coming Cappy?

Captain : No, let me enjoy me drink.

Crewmate : oh...ok.

The Paneer Kebabs and Murg Alishan were savory snacks that went well as bar nibbles. The chicken in the latter was a tad bit rare but the taste was great.

The mains were greasy, messy and scrumptious burgers. These felt very much like real burgers as opposed to the basic dumbed down burgers sold in most run of the mill places like the ones by a clown and a king. And as this was a Beer and Burger festival, I was told that the line up was a special edition menu. These huge burgers were quite heavy so I could not taste em' all but I did enjoy what I could grab. The place would make a great spot for a burger lover.

Bengal Fata Fati was a messy burger which tasted much like homemade Tariwala Chicken. I suppose Bengali homemade chicken and Punjabi homemade chicken have a similar flavor. The mayo in the burger was mixed with a Bengal mustard chili paste and added a twisty zing to the familiar flavor. The wedges were coated with Panchphoran masala which is a blend of spices used in Bengali cuisine. A welcome change as opposed to the overused and over done piri piri mixes.

Jerk Chicken Stoner was definitely the best of the burger lot. A spicy and potent Jamaican jerk mix applied to roasted chicken and draped with lots of mayo makes a great burger. It had a great aroma too. This burger was quite messy but if it ain't messy then it ain't fun at all. To play around with names a bit, Jerk Chicken Rocker would have been more apt.

Captain : This burger gave me a high.

Crewmate : Thats why this is called a stoner.

Captain : Good food fixes anything eh?

Crewmate : I wouldn't know, you usually eat mine too.

Fiery Punjabin is strangely a pure veggie burger. For folks like me, Punjabi food symbolizes meat and spiciness so this was definitely something, different. This monster was primarily made of a cottage cheese(Paneer) patty with pickled vegetables. The Yoghurt used is billed to be Bondi Yoghurt(Aussie) which I am not sure about. Appears to be a corruption of Boondi Yoghurt ha.

Eggless Hazelnut mousse was average. The liquor was rich but not very dense. It was quite airy from appearance. The major problem with this dessert was the unwelcome addition of hazelnut flakes. This felt like a last minute post work addition and felt very annoying as far as taste goes. I ended up flipping the mousse and slicing a layer off which contained the flakes.

The pricing seems fair for the generous portion sizes served. Most burgers are between 400 to 500 INR which feels fine. The drinks have variable prices. Some feel like a good deal while some feel on the higher side. In totality, the menu is well priced for a burger lover.

The service can be a little slow but the place was crowded beyond belief so its pardonable. The staff was professional in conduct. The bartender was extra polite as he walked us through making drinks and tolerating our sacrilegious mistakes ha. I remember not shaking the drink hard enough.

The evening was great and I can say that the complete package was well worth the trip. The Beer and Burger festival is a limited affair so the reader should make haste.

Hoppipola - Khar, Mumbai

I opened me map and saw the marked spot again. It read "Hoppipola". It made no sense to me but the fact that the word Tavern was marked along with it was enough to pique me interest. We were sailing by the coast on familiar seas and making a list of places. This coast was full of restaurants that tis' Captain would like to have future grub at.

We were at the right co ordinates when suddenly me lookout made a loud sound...of his snoring, the daft lad had fallen sleep. Aghast, I took out me looking glass and studied the coast. As they say, never send a lad to do a man's job. I found our destination inside one of the lanes on the coast. I smiled and said, "Lower the Dinghy mates. Grog ahoy."

We all loved jumping into rainy puddles as children but as we grew older, we became refined and matured forgetting the little pleasures of yesteryears. Hoppipola apparently means "jumping in the puddle" in Icelandic and perhaps strives to emulate that very experience that we have forgotten. Though not by literally jumping into puddles. Its brought to you by the same people behind Mainland China and Oh Calcutta, so it does bring with it an air of experience.

My visit was part of an event which introduced me to Hoppipola's new cocktail menu. So it was going to be a very boozy afternoon. Being more of a grubber and less of a grogger is always a tricky situation for me but I am still glad that I attended this event.

The ambiance felt very much like a marriage of an airport lounge and a cafe with a little bit of fine dine thrown in. While the lighting was dim and the place was completely indoor, the large vents made the place appear like an Al-fresco. It was a strange and an intriguing illusion. So that gave the place an appearance of both an indoor dining and Al - Fresco.

I soon met other food bloggers and Hoppipola's Chief Drinking Officer Sandeep who is a veteran mixologist with seven years of experience under his belt. That is much more than the period most Mainstream Karate schools take to give a pupil a black belt.

Whiskey Sour - We were given a warm up before we tried the new cocktail menu. And what better warm up than a classic cocktail like Whiskey sour. Potent, sour, tangy and sweet at the same time- This got my mood up. The egg white in it gave it a smooth texture making this literally the cheesecake of cocktail drinks.

Margeritha pizza, Chicken Skewers, Bread(Pita and Ragi bread) with hummus and Smoking Carlos were served along with the drinks as bar nibbles. Decent stuff and the skewers tasted really nice with the whiskey and vodka base cocktails.

Captain : Whiskey and Grub. I am already lovin' this place lad.

Crewmate : I agree Captain but why are you keeping all the grub near yourself?

Captain : Uhh...for safety lad. ;D

Birdcage lived up to its name literally. Served in an artsy cage with dry ice surrounding the mixture to keep it cool and protruding straws, this had one hell of a presentation. The base was white rum with additions of orange liqueur, pineapple, Kiwi, hazelnuts and pomegranate. It was a not a very strong drink and had a lot of sweet and sour to it. I felt that the flavor of the Cointreau dominated the drink. Think of it as an all grown up version of orange juices.

Auckland Ice Freeze was my favorite drink of the event. This was made with White Rum, Tequila, Vodka and hints of Triple sec. The kiwi was the power ingredient in this one and the cocktail tasted much like a Kiwi flavored liqueur. It had an addicting and mystifying flavor unlike anything I have ever drank before. I am told that the base recipe is based off Long island Ice tea but I don't really see the resemblance. Despite not having the best presentation, this was an amazing drink. If I were to go to Hoppipola again then this would, without a doubt be my drink of choice.

Captain : This brew has all me favorite things in it.

Crewmate : Mine too.

Captain : I loved the Rum and Vodka.

Crewmate : I love Vodka, Tequila and Triple Sec.

Captain : Wait you didn't mention Rum? WHAT KIND OF SAILOR DOES NOT LIKE RUM?

IQ(Intelligence Quotient) - Imagine all those bulbs that appear as a metaphor for ideas, now imagine if they contained a drink that one could sip on. Ah that's a novel idea. I was thinking of a drink that would be made of my favorite vodka and maybe some sweet stuff and ding - I got this over my head. Before it dropped and made a mess all over me, I promptly grabbed it and took a sip. Vodka has the odd ability to let any flavor dominate the drink but yet maintain its potency. This was a sweet cocktail(In both smell and taste) with additions of cranberry, passion fruit and watermelon. Having it in a bulb shaped glass was fun too.

The Hoppi Bath Tub was visibly pleasing and quite a novelty. Made of White Rum, Beer, basil and burnt orange - this had a base flavor of rum with aftertastes of beer. The orange additions subtly added a bubbly citric twist to the concoction. I am not a big fan of anything with beer in it but the mixer really blended the other ingredients well into the cocktail, and I found myself taking more than just a few sips. Now having a life size bathtub with this concoction would be quite an affair, but thats a story for another day.

The Ballerina was primarily a margarita, added with raspberry syrup and some balsamic vinegar. The glass was rimmed with a green powder which happened to be Kaffir Lime. A twist to the traditional salt rimming, this was quite fascinating. The drink was both sweet and savory. It was served with Bruschetta which was said to pair with it. Though I felt that it served as a nice nibble, it didn't exactly pair with the drink which was potent enough on its own. This ballerina can do a solo, she doesn't need an annoying partner ha.

Da Vincitini had an interesting presentation. You know somethings up when your drink is served up in a palette. Made of Vodka Expresso and Baileys, this one can be enjoyed with dark, white or caramel chocolate. While the drink smelled sweet and the presentation was amazing, I was not quite fond of the flavor.

I felt that there were too many voices talking at the same time in terms of flavor and they seemed to cancel each other out. But that could be due to the fact the drink served to me was mixed with the wrong chocolate. For example, I would have gone with White chocolate and skipped dark and caramel.

Desi Martini was made of premium Swedish Vodka(Absolut brand which claims to be distilled an infinite number of times), pomegranate, coriander, chilli and a spice mix. The drink wasn't very strong but had an interesting flavor. The after taste positively resembled Bhelpuri. I'd say the desi was successfully fused with the martini. Not just Desiness but this infuses the street food spirit of Mumbai into the martini as well. This makes a good drink to try for cocktail lovers and curious fellas like me.

Pornstar Martini - Other than the risque name, I see nothing scandalous about it. Probably not enough to warrant a ban by the trigger happy big brother. Its an interesting drink made of Swedish Vodka, Vanilla, Passion fruit and Sparking Wine. The flavor of Vanilla and passion fruit dominate this vodka based drink. Sweet, aromatic and slightly tangy is the best way to describe this.

Captain : Hmm strange. This drink doesn't remind me of Jenna, Maria or even Sunny.

Crewmate : I don't think the drink is supposed to do that.

Captain : Nonsense. The only reason I drank this was because I thought it would show me previously unseen images of those fine lasses.

Crewmate : And Davey Jones mops the deck for us, amirite?

This wrapped the cocktail tasting session up and got me a little high...on happiness, just like jumping in puddles.

The pricing seems apt for the experience and quality. Though you'd probably like to be careful which poison to go for.

The service is amazing going by the visual delights served to me during the event. It is an art to make an artistic cocktail and another to serve it, without disturbing the work.

I am not the drinking type of bloke but Hoppipola does present a compelling scenario. Sandeep has come up with some interesting concoctions and these are definitely worth a try. The restaurant also offers a diverse collection of wines and other pure drinks if you are not up for a cocktail.

The Captain's Score : 7/10

4Play Bar & Lounge - Khar West, Mumbai

Sometimes, me crew just wants to take a break from adventure and have a party at a tavern. Our map had a new mark today. A tavern that was largely unknown. The map was not fully drawn on this part as well. Never to give up on the unknown is the code of this sailor and I steered my ship through uncharted waters. Finally, I arrived at me destination and a party awaited us. Music, Grog and grub - what else could a sailor ask for?

4Play is an obvious reference. When you work the whole week, it is only fair to play a bit or lets say 4Play a bit. I visited 4Play as a part of a meet up organized by Food Bloggers Association of India(FBAI). The day selected was a Friday. The time was late evening. Yep, it was prime time. Time to grog down my tiring week.

4Play is located inside New Castle Hotel which is at a walking distance from Khar Railway station. And it lies on Linking road so its easily accessible by bus or car. However, the building itself feels very residential and one cannot believe how narrow the entry to 4Play is. It feels like a hole in the wall kind of an establishment or perhaps a Narnia like world whose entrance is a small cupboard.

However once inside, a nice lounge awaits you. The atmosphere is electric and the decor is decent. There are a few anomalies with the decor, however the establishment is still new and the management assures us that they will be working on that. Its has a typical dim lit appearance and is great for dates , brodowns or just getting away from the stressful week. To be honest I prefer blue lights over green or orange for lounges. So I found the ambiance quite cool. Lest I forget, there is also a large projector screen to see your favorite sports. Great place to enjoy a Gayle storm or the English Premier League.

As fellow connoisseurs poured in one by one, the twilight sojourn began. Preferring something mild, I chose a Bacardi Breezer alcopop. The selection for drinks is quite good as expected. Those with a ravenous appetite for grog can get some of the best drinks money can buy and the teetotaler kind can sip on some mocktails.

As time progressed, we were served with an assortment of some fine finger food.

Veg Bruschetta is a classical antipasto dish that is found in most fine food installations. 4Play's version was definitely better than the standard, tomato-basil-olive oil combo. The cheese added to the preparation. The small Bruschetta toasties were definitely a good way to flag off the evening. The presentation was great and it appeared as colorful as multicolored confetti sprayed on a Holi crowd.

Captain : It looks too beautiful to be eaten.

Crewmate : But it must be eaten, You once said that food is meant to be eaten to complete...

Captain : Shush lad, don't ya remind me of my own words.

Tandoori Mushrooms - Its rare to come across this item and it was tasty fun. Tangy and savory with marinated mushrooms which appeared to be wrapped in a bit of cornflour. They were tasty although the capsicum slice in the base of each piece felt a bit of a mismatch. This item was one of the favored dishes of the meet. My friend on the other side of the table seemed to enjoy these thoroughly.

Captain : Do ya think these Mushrooms grow in the wild?

Crewmate : Mushrooms probably but Tandoors unlikely.

Fish Fingers was one of my two favorite dishes of the day. Wrapped with crumbs and coated with a savory-spicy-tangy mixture, these were an addictive part of the meal. Each bite revealed a soft gooey and white Basa filling inside. For a supposedly deep fried item, 4Play's Fish Fingers was barely oily and full of taste. I found myself eating several fingers. I felt that these were some of the best Fish Fingers I have ever had. The creamy dip went great with each bite. And as visible from the picture, the plating was beautiful.

Captain : Fish Fingers are me favorite.

Crewmate : I understand Cappy, but I would like to try some too.

Captain : Sure lad, Each finger for one day of desk sweeping duty.

Mongolian Paneer - Again a rare preparation. Was great on the plating part but a bit messy on the eating part. It was oily and lacked the zing that it was expected to have.Seemed to lack chilli sauce as the sauce present on it was quite sparse in density. Somehow the flavor didn't seemed to extend to the Paneer. Methinks this one needs some fine tuning.

Fish Pattaya was supposedly a new preparation for me. I do not recall having this anywhere before and I need to make that clear to explain my bias. This was an ultra soft melt in your mouth Basa cooked with a spinachy concoction. It suffered from the problems of being far too messy and greasy. The green concoction could not add much to the flavor and it just tasted like gooey plain Basa.

Corn Cheese Croquets were without a doubt, the best item of the evening. From the start itself, the item impressed me. The plating was excellent, it almost had an artistic feel to it. The crust was barely oily, soft, crispy and cooked to perfection. The aroma played games with my olfactory senses. And as I took a full bite, the soft river of cheese and corn overwhelmed my gustatory senses. I had a glimpse of food heaven. The savory crust and the salty insides were a great combination. The dip added to the experience. This was definitely the best Corn Cheese Croquet that I have ever had so far. And do remember, that this is coming for a vegetarian item from a carnivore.

Captain : Never have I eaten such toothsome croquets.

Crewmate : Its not even meat Cappy.

Captain : Good grub need not always be meat lad.

Chicken Peri Peri had a glitchy start for me. It felt greasy and low on taste at the beginning. However, I found that it was an issue of uneven plating. The chicken on one side had too much liquid while on the other end it was a bit dry. The chicken itself tasted great but somehow the liquid was causing an issue. I promptly stirred my serving a bit and the taste then became acceptable. It was soft chicken cooked with a garlicky sauce and a hint of Peri Peri. It was definitely not one of 4Play's best cards but was a satisfactory item.

Named Chicken Kali Miri, this preparation seemed like the classical Chicken Kaali Mirch Kebab to me. This one is an old favorite of mine and 4play's version wasn't bad either. Soft marinated chicken with the enticing flavor of pepper. It had a nice aroma and definitely had the ability to make anybody hungry. It was well cooked with no burnt edges and uniform texture.

Captain: Kali Miri? That sounds like Calamari. Its confusing.

Crewmate : These are Kali Mirch kebabs.

Captain : I agree lad so why in the seven seas would someone name it like that.

With some chitchat over food, our evening came to a close. Full of player food, I was ready to head home.

The service is decent. The staff is both professional and well experienced. The test of a good lounge service lies in the server's knowledge of serving drinks. Our server made no mistakes while serving different drinks to different members of our rather large group.

4Play has a pricing that is on par with similar Lounge and Restopub restaurants. The wine options feel cheaper than most other restaurants that I have been to.

To conclude, I would say that my evening was great. 4Play indeed makes a great addition to Mumbai's diverse foodscape.
However, the lounge still lacks a few things. First would be some brand building cum marketing. I am told that this is being taken care of. The second thing that 4play lacks is a dessert menu. Would be nice to see things such as Brownies, Cheesecakes, Mud cakes and the like. A small dessert menu would do wonders since I did feel that something was missing at the end of the day.

The Captain's Score : 8/10

"Enough celebration and enough chatter lads. The winds are right and we must sail under the moonlight. Until next time."
